How to Get Rid of Oily Skin Fast

Oily skin can make your grooming routine seem all for naught. But just because you may be more prone to breakouts, larger open pores, and a perpetually glossy mug doesn't mean you should have to put up with it. Below are some of the best ways to beat the grease.

1. Moisturize

This might sound like the last thing you should do when the oil on your face seems to have taken care of the job of a moisturizer, but think again. Oddly enough, the most effective way to treat it is to use a daily moisturizer designed to specifically combat oily skin — otherwise you can make things worse. Rather than using a regular, everyday moisturizer that would normally quench dry skin, you need a product like Lab Series Skincare For Men Oil Control Daily Hydrator, which can help regulate and balance your skin's natural moisture.

2. Be diligent with your cleansing routine

Being diligent with your cleansing routine means that you need to properly wash your face both morning and night. "Always use a gentle cleanser since harsh soaps can trigger the skin to increase oil production," says April Armstrong, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology at the University of California, Davis, to WebMD. There's two things to be aware of when choosing a cleanser and using it: Do not use one that's too rough in terms of exfoliation (also using any kind of buffer or washcloth can stimulate more oil secretion) and choose a cleanser that includes an acid such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, or beta-hydroxy acid if a normal cleanser is just not cutting it.

"Many products containing these acids are marketed as acne facial care products. They're great for people with acne, but they're also fine for people whose problem is just oily skin," Armstrong adds. Because some of these cleansers can also be a little irritating, test it out on a small area first and use warm water to prevent any further irritation. Try this Murad Acne Clarifying Cleanser.

3. Take that "tone" with your face

When you have oily skin, it's very important not to miss this step in your cleansing process. Because you likely have larger pores and subsequently larger sebaceous glands that cause all that excess oil, once you've cleansed, it's essential to use a toner that works to close up your pores to prevent any further grease build up. Toner is really that missing piece to your skin care puzzle.

4. Mask it

While there's no need to use a facial mask everyday — consider it necessary maintenance for your face every once and a while. Dermologica's Sebum Clearing Masque Breakout Preventing Clay is a cooling clay mask that helps to prevent and clear breakouts. Additionally, this oil-absorbing clay formula helps to detoxify skin as active ingredient salicylic acid stimulates natural exfoliation that clears sebum out of your pores. Plus, it looks lovely once you slather it on your face.

5. Take care on the go

Since you're likely to endure stress, sweat, and other fun stuff that can lead to some complexion leakage throughout your day, you may be in need of a quick fix on-the-go. It doesn't matter how much you take care of your skin, sometimes you're going to need an afternoon pick-me-up when oil strikes. Whether it's an easy-to-use pad or blotting paper for a quick sweep of your T-zone, or even a refreshing gel, these products are designed to reduce shine when you need it the most.
